Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can put a stop to fast-moving baseballs and others can withstand hurricane-force winds. How?

In regard to hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are meticulously tested for impact resistance.

Tests consist of shooting a two-by-four at the window to verify glass remains intact. We use our hurricane cannon to fire the wood, which moves 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We figured, if we could design a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could discover a solution that could protect from home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was asked to help equip a historic building near Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s just what we did.

We modified our hurricane cannon to experiment on the home run-resistant windows. We shot baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would recreate the power of a home run.

Our tempered glass withstood the hits best because it’s stronger and safer than generally used annealed glass.

All About Physics

It takes a speed surpassing 100 mph and a height exceeding 100 feet to send a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s case, we learned the baseballs would be moving at about 60 mph upon impact with windows.

But we went above and beyond and tested impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not concerned about an MLB home run propelling toward your home, there are a variety of reasons to choose durable, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s ideal for homeowners who want an added level of protection from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are bringing up the next great baseball player.

Consider the advantages and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Toughened glass much like what is used in car windows.
  • Used where injuries from broken glass are a concern.
  • Normally fragments into small, square fragments instead of sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t come apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To discover more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Lafayette at 317-983-5804. Or, book a free, in-home consultation online.
