How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Windows are important to your home’s beauty and comfort; they give you a wonderful view of the outdoors, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your house. Because they are so vital to a home, they go through a lot of action. It’s important to keep your windows clean so that they can continue to do their job well.

Window glass can get dirty pretty fast, even sooner with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning isn’t difficult. Many McComb Window & Door windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from inside your home, too. Looking for a simple, new window cleaning process? Here’s what McComb Window & Door suggests:

  1. Start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that collects on the sill and ledges will remain there for a long time otherwise, and cleaning it out will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. You should not use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment along the side of your window screen that faces inside. You can also use this vacuum piece to pick up any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your window’s glass. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Then you can add the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from multiple different directions for the best clean.
  4. After the cleaning, let your windows air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if any streaks remain.

Here are some more tips, too! We encourage you to clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution quicker and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our McComb Window & Door professionals prefer microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean throughout the year.
